01 / LEARN THE DIFFERENCE

Where does the unease come from?

These are working editorial definitions. Genres overlap; a label is a route into a film, not a promise about its pace or intensity.

THE FAMILIAR TURNS STRANGE

Mascot horror

A character made to welcome or entertain becomes a threat. Think animatronic performers, a costumed attraction, or a smiling figure in a place built for play.

The useful question: what happens when a comforting design stops being comforting? Venue mascots sit at the center; killer toys are a related tradition, marked separately in this guide.

THE PAST WILL NOT STAY PUT

Gothic horror

A place, family or relationship is haunted by what came before. Isolated homes, secrets, supernatural uncertainty and troubling desire often shape the story.

The useful question: what has this place inherited, concealed or refused to let go? A castle is optional. Historical costumes alone do not make a film gothic.
